The Governing Council of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has finally approved the appointment of a new Vice Chancellor (VC) after a prolonged legal tussle. The new VC is Prof. Ayobami Taofeek Salami, the former Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic).
The decision to approve Prof. Salami’s appointment was reached at the Council’s meeting on Monday. Salami, who is a former Director, Institute of Ecology in the institution, now succeeds Prof. Bamitale Omole.
The unions of non-teaching staff in the institution – Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) had dragged the Council to court to stop the process on the allegation of deliberately ignoring the rules guiding appointment of a new VC.
Six candidates were initially shortlisted but only three, including Salami, were invited for the final interview.
