ASUU chairman opens up on his sack by LASU

ASUU chairman opens up on his sack by LASU

The Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Lagos State University (LASU) chapter, Isaac Oyewunmi, has denied the corruption allegation levelled against him by the authorities of the school. The Governing Council of the institution sacked Oyewunmi alongside his deputy, Adebowale Adeyemi, for various alleged fraudulent activities on Friday .

He was accused of demanding N50,000 from 2003 modular year students of Political Science Education, who were poised to process their results while Adeyemi-Suenu was accused of “unilaterally changing the status of students earlier asked to withdraw from the university from ‘withdraw’ to ‘good standing.”
Reacting to the incident, Oyewunmi blamed his predicament on “political moves.”
“All the allegations are false. I am not guilty although right now I have been asked to step aside while the union (ASUU) deals with it. The secretary is in the best position to react,” he told Premium Times.

“I don’t want to say much but we all know what is happening in our varsity, all they are saying is politically motivated. When the time is right, we would know, we have a robust structure in ASUU and the union has asked me not to talk on this issue so I won’t flay the union’s position.

The secretary of LASU-ASUU branch, Anthony Dansu, said the decision came as a shock.

“We are very shocked by the actions. It came to us all as a shock but the union is on top of the whole situation. At the appropriate time, the union will act,” he stated.

JAMB Direct Entry Closes Soon - See More Details

JAMB Direct Entry Closes Soon - See More Details
Dr Fabian Benjamin, the head of media and information of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), has announced that the Direct Entry e-Registration portal will be closed on September 15.

This was announced on Friday, September 8, in an interview with newsmen in Abuja. He was also quoted as saying that there might be no postponement of the deadline.

According to NAN, Dr Benjamin also advised JAMB candidates to re-upload their ‘O’ level results in the new portal as the previous portal did not allow for the capturing of candidates level of grades.

He added that candidates should use the approved Computer Based Test (CBT) Centres for the exercise.

Interestingly, the new portal has provided a platform for the detailed category of the West African Examination Result (WAEC) of candidates for proper placement.

He said: “The first platform that was used for the exercise does not create room for the capturing of the levels of grade such as C4, C5, C6, B1, B2, B3 and A1.

“You know in some schools, all these ‘O’ level grades are being considered.
For example, if you have B1 and another one has B3 and there is no room for separation in the platform schools may not be able to ascertain the level of grades some schools will consider the O’ level grades.

“And the first platform just stated A, B, C, so with this new platform, there will be room for the download of the level of grades. Somebody who has B1 will stand a better chance than the person with B3.

“So, we use this new platform to capture all those detailed categories of WAEC result so that no grade of result will be left uploaded.’’

Meanwhile, when speaking on the JAMB process, Dr Fabian Benjamin, explained that students could only secure admission after they might have passed through the rudiments of admission processes.

He had said: “We have come up with the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS) this year. This entails that once candidates are admitted and the institution approves, then JAMB will approve.

The information about the candidates will be keyed into CAPS automatically. “Candidates can monitor their admission process through CAPS online and those who want to get admission letter can do so by printing such online.’

LASU Sacks ASUU Chairman, Vice Chairman And 15 Other Lecturers - See Reason

LASU Sacks ASUU Chairman, Vice Chairman And 15 Other Lecturers - See Reason
The Lagos State University (LASU) Governing Council has dismissed 15 Academic Staff, including the Chairman and Vice Chairman of Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) of the institution, over various malpractices.

The dismissed LASU-ASUU Chairman and Vice Chairman were Isaac Oyewunmi and Adebowale Adeyemi-Suenu.

LASU spokesperson, Ademola Adekoya, said in Lagos on Friday that the institution also dismissed two non-academic staff and demoted two others.
Among others dismissed for various financial and academic misconduct were Olatoye Raji, Olugbenro Odofin, Adebowale Ademeso, John Adeogun, Scholastica Udegbe and Olufemi Soyeju.
Other were Olawale Raimi, Ademola Adesina, Shamisudeen Badmus, Christiana Obagbuwa, Emmanuel Asapo, Lateef Salami, Olubukola Oyeniya and Fatimat Bakare.

Mr. Adekoya said that the decision to dismiss the staff was taken at LASU 115th Governing Council Meeting on Thursday.
“Pursuant thereto, the Governing Council with immediate effect dismissed 15 members of the academic staff, two members of non-academic staff, and sanctioned two others for different acts of misconduct.

Mr. Oyewunmi was dismissed for demanding N50, 000 from students while Mr. Adeyemi-Suenu was sacked for “unilaterally altered the results of 12 students already advised to withdraw by Senate’’
Mr. Adekoya said the council established that Mr. Oyewunmi demanded N50, 000 from 2003 modular year students of Political Science Education on the sandwich programme to process their results..

According to the council, Mr. Oyewunmi is found culpable of attempt to obtain money for himself as an inducement to carry out his duties, and consequently dismissed from the service of the university.

Mr. Adekoya said that the university established that Mr. Adeyemi-Suenu unilaterally altered the results of 12 students already advised to withdraw by Senate in the Department of History and International Studies in the 2015/2016 academic session.

“He changed their status from “withdrawn” to “good standing”. He also changed the results of some final year students and stragglers outside the scope of the departmental decision,” he said.

“Dr Adeyemi-Suenu also awarded grade point of 2.0 to two students in an examination which they were absent.

“This is tantamount to manipulation of students’ results in contravention of provisions of the Conditions and Scheme of Service for Senior Staff and therefore dismissed from the service of the university.”

How To Know If Your School Will Write Post UTME Exam This Year

How To Know If Your School Will Write Post UTME Exam This Year
Trust me, we all know it’s really difficult to know if your school will write post utme exam this year. The reason is that the federal government had recently announced the scrapping of post utme examin schools and pegged the admission cut off mark at 180.

This decision has posed a lot of pressure on school managements because of so many reasons. The main reason is that there are too many candidates who scored more than 180 in JAMBand these numbers has exceeded the admission capacities of schools.

This challenge alone could compel some university managements to conduct some kind of screening to weed out some incompetent candidates. And if they do this, I will call it post utme and I don’t know what you will call it. However, some school have started releasing their post utme forms.

Recently, a former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, NUC, Professor Peter Okebukola, has disclosed that the scrapping of Post-UTME means that tertiary institutions will now go back to the agreement NUC had with Vice-Chancellors in 2004 when it introduced Post-UTME which is to screen candidates on oral interview and written essay.

He pointed out that tertiary institutions were not suppose to conduct screening for candidates similar to that of JAMB as that was the part of the agreement guiding the introduction of Post-UTME. He lamented that tertiary institutions have since deviated from that agreement.

And now, the truth is that some schools may consider administering any form of screening to fish out the best candidates for admission. The question now is, how do you know if your school will write post utme exam this year? See the best answer below.

Students Protest Inability To Write NECO Exams In Delta

Students Protest Inability To Write NECO Exams In Delta
No fewer than fifty-two frustrated candidates who were supposed to be writing the ongoing National Examination Council (NECO) Examinations in Orhoakpor Secondary School, Ethiope East Local Government area of Delta State yesterday took to the streets to press home their anger.

The school, Orhoakpor Secondary School was allegedly blacklisted from participating in the on-going examination by NECO authority over its alleged involvement in examination malpractice.

But a female teacher in the school who did not want her name in the print, said it was not true, adding that NECO Officials bungled the schools channels during enrolment of the candidates for the Examination.

Trouble started last Friday when the students who were supposed to have started their examination around 10:00am, disclosed there was no preparation for them and supervisors to conduct the examination were not on hand.

It was gathered that the disappointment angered the candidates who demanded to see the principal and the staff who enrolled them for the examinations and explain why the examination could not start.

The protesters reportedly took their protest to Isiokolo Divisional Police station of the station where they were urged to keep the peace to enable the school officials handle the matter.

Narrating their plight to our correspondent, leader of the aggrieved candidates, Ukoh said they did their enrolment in the school sometime in March, 2016, adding that when they reported in the school for the exams, they were told that the exercise could not.

But the school principal who did not want her name in the print, said the police arrested the staff who enrolled the candidates, even as the police image maker in the state, Mrs. Celestina Kalu, confirmed that a staff was helping the police for investigation.

Gov. Bello renames Kogi varsity after Abubakar Audu

Gov. Bello renames Kogi varsity after Abubakar Audu
Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, on Friday renamed the Kogi State University, Ayangba , after the late first civilian governor of the state, Prince Abubakar Audu. Bello announced the change in the name of the 15- year-old university during a statewide broadcast to mark his victory at the state governorship election petition tribunal.

He said that naming the university was the ultimate honour that could be done to the memory of the late colourful politician who ruled the state twice as the civilian governor from 1991 to 1993 and 1999 to 2003.

Audu himself established the university in 2001 and named it Prince Abubakar Audu University, but his successor , Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, changed the name to Kogi State University in 2004.
Justifying his decision to restore the university to its original name, Bello said that Audu laid a solid foundation for the growth and development of the state
“Today, and as always, I celebrate the life and times of Prince Abubakar Audu, the first Executive Governor of Kogi State.

“It is our hope that those who want to lay claim to his legacy will at least develop the same heart for the growth and development of Kogi State that he demonstrated through his lifetime,” he said.
According to the governor, an executive bill would soon be forwarded to the house of assembly to formalise the change in the name of the university.

Audu, who was the candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the November 21, 2015 governorship election in the state, died suddenly on November 22 before the result of the election was announced.
The leadership of the APC consequently substituted the name of Audu with that of Yahaya Bello as the candidate in the supplementary governorship election held on Dec. 5, 2015.

The governor also used the broadcast to thank the people of the state for their support and understanding since his assumption of office in January .
He said that since the five petitions filed against him had been thrown out for lack of merit, the state was now set to witness a new direction and accelerated development.

According to Bello, a blueprint of the administration which would begin creation of one million jobs for the unemployed youths would be unveiled by next week.

He called on all those who lost at the tribunal, irrespective of their political affiliation, to join hands with him to develop the state, saying “there was no victor, no vanquish.”

Official: JAMB Cut-Off Mark Announce, Post-UTME Scrapped

JAMB Admission Cut-off Mark for 2016/2017 Session Announced

Following the decisions arrived at the just concluded 2016 JAMB Combined Policy Meeting on Admissions to Universities, Polytechnics and other higher institutions in Nigeria, the 2016 official cut-off mark has been pegged at 180 for Universities, Polytechnic and Colleges of Education.

This implies that no higher institution; universities, polytechnics, colleges of education or certificate awarding institutions recognized by JAMB will go below 180. However, they can choose to go above the benchmark of 180.

Similarly, the decision to scrap post-UTME was taken. This means that institutions will no longer conduct Post-UTME screenings.

According to the minister of education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, there is confidence in what JAMB is doing and hence no need to conduct another examination for candidates seeking admission into higher institutions.

He further stated that universities that have complaints against JAMB should bring it forward for address.
However, the minister directed JAMB to stop demanding extra charges on other services rendered by the board to candidates which include change of course/institution.
Here are the words of the JAMB Registrar, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde after the meeting, “180 is given, no institution will go below 180 this year, And some universities can go above it, I know University of Ife will not go below 200 and University of Lagos will not go below 200 and also UI. All these ones stand but 180 as bench mark for others.

“This year we have more than enough candidates, we have over 1.5 million candidates so we will get enough candidates to take in all the schools if they are serious. Re-distribution is already ongoing, because

UNILORIN VC Calls On FG To Establish More Specialized Universities

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, has called on the Federal Government to intensify efforts towards establishing more specialised institutions of higher learning in the country.

Prof. Ambali, who made the call last Monday while declaring open the 7th International Students’ Day Celebration organised by the Centre for International Education (CIE), UniIlorin, said that it would promote enterprise and entrepreneurship in the country.

The Vice-Chancellor, who was represented at the event by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Technology and Innovation), Prof. Gabriel Olatunji, said, “We need universities that would be teaching graduates how to fish themselves, not the ones that will show them the way to the fish market”, adding that “Nigeria is ripe for Universities of Medicine, Pharmacy, Social Sciences, Humanities, among others where critical talents would be aggregated for increased value.

Earlier in his remarks, the Director of CIE, Prof. Mohammed Ibrahim, disclosed that the University has 272 international students from 18 countries and 21 foreign staff.

He noted that the presence of the Guest Speaker, Dr Josephine Ojiambo, who is a Deputy Secretary General at the Commonwealth Secretariat, is a boost to the Centre’s activities, as the international diplomat would contribute her quota to increasing the Commonwealth scholarship given to students and staff of the University of Ilorin.

In his address, the President of the Unilorin International Students Association (UISA), Mr. Hounnougbo Kandeski Arthur Arnaud, expressed the Association’s appreciation to the University administration for “creating an enabling environment to ease our learning and for creating a platform for cultural integration among all international students within and outside the great better by far institution, the University of Ilorin.
